Live Site Learning CIC - MAP Project 2020 - 2021 - 2022

Live Site Learning CIC have partnered up with MAP Charity to collaborate on a fantastic project at their amazing building at Hope Foundry, a stunning Grade II-listed building with a longstanding history of making, creating and inventing as part of Leeds’ proud industrial heritage. MAP Charity, plans to create a single site with multiple uses that directly feeds back into the common goal of advancement of future generations – particularly for those with less opportunities to pursue creative paths. MAP Charity have kindly given LSL CIC the opportunity to work with them to help make that plan a reality through architecture, construction, heritage and craft skills.

Week 1 consisted of observing ongoing maintenance works to the building. This particular day we observed repair works to the timber sash windows.  Rozita Rahman, who is an architect with experience working predominantly in contemporary design, came along for an insight in to reading a historic building. We did an exercise on reading the building. Understanding the material, form and condition. Illustrating this through photography, annotation and illustration.

Week 2, LSL CIC had the pleasure of working with students from both Leeds College of Building and Leeds Beckett University. The college students, studying the Built Environment working with Second year architecture students, had a tour of this fantastic site, organised by MAP Charity and accompanied by Robert Dyson of the Civic Trust. With the help of Rozita Rahman architect, Soreen Bilbas architect of TH3M Architects and Fiona Arnot building surveyor from the Royal Household, the students split in to groups and had an insight into performing a measured and condition survey.

Week 3 LSL CIC, worked with 16 students from Leeds Beckett University Architecture Department. With the help and assistance of Rozita Rahman architect, Fiona Arnot Building Surveyor and Mark Douglas of English Heritage, the students had the professional insight to the history of the building, learning skills on how to measure and survey the building. MAP Charity organised a historic tour of the site with Robert Dyson along with introductions to Emma Hardaker who is working with MAP producing street art with the students. LBU students used this information to explore the sensitivities of approaching a building of this nature. The students will now be using the site as their design site.

These courses have been done with the restrictions of Covid19. Protective measures were put in place along with the governments guidelines. Students were provided with a personalised tote bag that included a clipboard, paper, pens, measuring equipment that at the end of the session was handed back to LSL CIC. In addition to this, any other equipment that was used, was wiped with disinfectant.
